My Spring Awakening

WELCOME!

Mar 6 2007

Hey everyone!

Listening To: Spring Awakening OCR

Hey everyone, I'm Remy and I play Thea in the new hit Broadway show, Spring Awakening!  This is my blog, and this is where I'm going to update you guys about cool things that have happened in relation to the show.

Allow me to introduce myself! I'm 17 years old, currently a senior in high school, and will be attending Columbia University some time in the near future. I have been acting professionally since I was 10, and now I am finally making my Broadway debut! My past credits include three Off-Broadway shows (including Spring Awakening at the Atlantic Theater), a national tour, a few regional productions, and multiple recordings/workshops for potential Broadway shows. I've always had a passion for theater ever since my father strongly encouraged (haha!) me to try a local community theater (Crystal Theater, it's in Norwalk, look it up!). I fell in love with acting immediately--the stress of it, the excitement, the nervousness, the lights, the eyes on me, everything.  I keep begging my parents to let me take my passion to the next level, which they did, amazingly enough.  I went from reading "Backstage" (a newspaper for actors) to being called in for auditions by my agent.

If you've read the New York Magazine interview (go pick it up now if you haven't!!), you'd know that I've been with the show for a year. I actually auditioned for the show way back in January of '05, for the Lincoln Center workshop. Although I made it to the last callback, I didn't get the part. I let it go, and almost forgot about the show until I was asked to audition for it a year later, in early February of '06. This time I was more prepared, more determined, and more comfortable in my own skin. I think Michael, Duncan, Steven, Tom, Ira, and Kim saw that in me.  I was told a week later that I had the part of Marta. This was for a three week workshop at Baruch College.  At the end of the three weeks, we performed the semi-staged show for the creative team.  We then went on a three week hiatus, when I was informed that I was going to be Thea for the Off-Broadway show.  Rehearsals began in March of '06 for the Atlantic Theater production.

...I think this is a good place to leave off because I do want you guys to come back and read more.  Coming up: more about my history with the show, what it's like to transfer to Broadway, what it's like to juggle school and shows (in a few words: it's tough!), the perks of being on Broadway, and our latest press events!! In addition, I tell you how to become a professional actress, and what auditions are REALLY like.

If you haven't seen Spring Awakening yet, now's a good time to head to the website: www.springawakening.com and get educated! I recommend it for anyone 14 and up (because high school freshman are mature enough to handle the subject matter).  The musical is beautiful, and everything is tasteful and inventive. For those who are theater-phobic--Spring Awakening is a rock concert disguised as a Broadway musical, so you'll feel more like you're at a Duncan Sheik concert. ; )

Anyways, stay tuned!
