YESS!!... I finally did it! I made it through my first semester of college. It was very difficult in the beginning of the semseter, but it got easier later on. I was very excited to start college but at the same time scared. I didn't know what was going to happen. Moving into the dorms, meeting new people, and doing things for myself was the biggest change for me. Although I live here in the islands, it's still hard for me to leave home and be away from my family. I'm used to them always being there for me. But now that I'm in college, I know that they aren't going to do things for me anymore and that I have to start doing everything by myself. When I first moved into the dorms, I got caught up in the whole excitement of "being on my own" that I forgot to call my family for 2 weeks. There was tension during that time because my family felt unappreciated and that I wanted to exclude them from my life. Of course that wasn't true because if it wasn't for my family, I wouldn't be here in college! So, we had a big talk about me calling at least once in a while to update them on things. So advice, include your family in your life, even though you are "on your own" because they really care for you and it would be nice for you to let them know what's going on in your life. Just hearing from you is all they need! Also, meeting new people and doing things for myself was a little difficult for me. I'm so used to the friends that I had in high school and doing things routinely. When I moved to college, I had to do everything on my own and start to put myself a little out there to others. I don't really prefer to put myself out there because I can be shy. But I discovered the "outgoing" part of me. I met a group friends that I pretty much hang out with almost everyday. We enjoy each others company and just take care of each other. It's such a strong bond and I'm blessed to have found thsi group of friends who I know will get my back. I never had such a strong bond with a group of people previous to college and they definitely make my college experience more awesome! Another word of advice, get out there and meet as much people as you can. Don't limit yourself because there are so many incredible people out there, you just have to find them! I have been through so much this past semester including my College Opportunites Program. Without them, I wouldn't be attending the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. But, everything I have been through such as my first job, drama between friends, eating a lot, school work, time management, and many more have taught me so much. This first semester was definitely a learning period to better prepare me for my future semesters. I can honestly say that college is HARD, but I LOVE IT!! I know that sounds weird, but how can you become a better person if you don't put yourself through challenges? By putting myself through challenges and learning from my mistakes, I can better prepare myself for anything as well as, make myself a better person. If you're better prepared, you can prety much handle any unexpected obstacle that you might have to face later on through life. So, college is going to be a challenge and learning from it can only benefit you in the long run. Just make the best of everything!!!!

This was my last week of finals...YAY!! I'm so happy theverything from the first semester is over!! It's been very long week and it feels good to have gotten it over with. I only had two finals to take this semester, which were my Hawaiian Studies class an dmy Human Development class. First I had my Human Development exam. I knew that I was borederline with my grades in that class, so I knew that I really had to study hard for this final to my A. This time around, I decided to try and study by myself to see how I do. I'm still in the process of finding the right studying method for me. Any ways, I've been gradually studying throughout the weekend and a little before. Then the final came on Tuesday. We got our grades on Wednesday and I found out that I got a B on the final and came 3 points short of the grade I really wanted. Kinda junk! But, at least I know next time to be more prepared and study harder! The second final was my Hawaiian Studies class. I was in the same situation with my grades for this exam. But I had to pretty much get a perfect on this final to get an A in the class. So the pressure was definitely on!! Well I pulled an all nighter trying to study for the exam. My friend stayed up with me to try and test me, I thank her for that! But any ways, it was test day. I was walking to class and totally got rained on!! Like, all my clothes were dripping wet and when I got into the class, you could hear people saying, "oOoo!" Yah, they knew it sucked! But oh well, that kinda stuff happens a lot in Manoa because weather is unpredictable! Any ways, I took my final and I don't think I did that great because I didn't go over some of the things that were on the exam that I knew I should have reviewed. But we'll see what I get for that class later on. Well, WHAT"S DONE IS DONE!!....and now time to enjoy my break!!...FOSHO!!!!

Earlier this week, I was set up by my friends to go on a date. I have never been on a date or gone out with anyone before, so this was very different for me. When I found out that I was going on a date, I really didn’t want to. I’m not the type of person to put myself out there when it comes to guys. But, I thought that I should just go because…I don’t know…in college, you’re supposed to try new things. So I decided to just go, it wouldn’t hurt to try. My date picked me up from my dorm (in his really nice car, by the way) and we went to this place in Waikiki called Cheeseburger Paradise. I ordered the Mahi Mahi Sandwich and her ordered Fried Coconut Shrimp. Honestly, the food wasn’t the best that I’ve tasted, but I have to say that the service was great…haha. The waiter that we had was very friendly. During dinner, we decided that we would have been good with Subway =P Any ways, overall the date went pretty good. We got to talk a little a bit, but for me it was kind of awkward most of the time. I wouldn’t know what to talk about majority of the time, so I think I kind of embarrassed myself…haha. Oh well, if I do find a guy for me it would be someone that I can be my crazy self with and I would feel more comfortable with him. I’m not trying to say my date was bad, he was actually great. And if he was willing to go on a second date, I would! But yes that was my first date experience, pretty short, a little awkward at times, but pretty fun at the same time!

I have pretty much worked at every home football game this year. When I looked at the newest work schedule, I saw that I wasn’t scheduled to work at the biggest game of UH history, which was University of Hawai’i vs. Boise State game. I waited all season for that game. The schedule showed that I work the same day of the game but at the Women’s basketball tournament. I enjoy working arena sports, but the Boise vs. Hawai’i was the game that I really wanted to work at because that was supposed to be the game that decided which team would become WAC Champions. I was so bummed when I found out that I couldn’t work at that game. I wish they didn’t schedule a tournament on the same day of the MOST IMPORTANT game of the season! Since I thought I was going to work at the game, I didn’t get a ticket. It was impossible to get tickets for the game because they were sold out about couple months ago. Pretty nuts! There were 50,000 people in the stadium and it was shown on ESPN. So many people flew in just to come watch the game. I can’t believe I missed the biggest event of the year! After I finished work at the arena, I went to get a new phone. Super stoked! Then we went to meet up with my aunties at Red Lobster for dinner. At Red Lobster, they were broadcasting the game and I kept running back and forth between our table and the bar. I think the waiters and waitresses were kind of thinking I was weird or something but I don’t care because I had to support my boys…haha. Even though I got to watch most of the game in Red Lobster, it wasn’t the same as me actually being on the field. SUPER BUMMED!!!!

Most of the time, I found myself doing nothing! Pretty surprising huh?...I though so too! =P Any ways, I pretty much had to deal with going to class and work. In a way I was busy, but not as loaded like when I actually have homework to do. There would be occasional assignments here and there due that week and I would complete them, but they weren’t as strenuous as the other weeks. So for most of the week, I thought it was pretty cruize! It sounds like I’m telling the whole story, but yah not quite. Ok, I have a big habit, which is to procrastinate on my schoolwork. I’ve started the process to break that habit, but I know that I haven’t completely shattered my really horrible habit. The key word was “started.” Any ways, although I was doing my minor assignments, I continued to push back some of the major projects that were given to me earlier. That’s really bad…I know! Now I have a really busy weekend ahead of me. That’s totally my fault! But we’ll see how my weekend goes on and see if I can balance my fun as well as my projects…

Hey guys! Well this past week, I went to this place called the Lyon Arboreteum.. It’s a place where they have a tropical rainforest and many beautiful scenery. This tropical rainforest is the only tropical rainforest in the whole nation that is attached with a University. Also, few movies and television shows were filmed there such as, The Rising Sun, Lost, and Jurrasic Park. I can see why the producers and directors chose that area because if you ever head out there, the view is just incredible! It’s located in the back of Manoa Valley. While I was there, I got to learn how to make “floral wrist leis.” There were wonderful ladies there to help me who have been volunteers there for many years. These ladies put so much time an effort into making their leis and the finish products are extremely magnificent. As they were teaching me, I found out that it was very difficult to make one of these wrist leis because there are so many factors to consider. For example, you have to think about a good arrangement for the flowers so that it matches, if you want to make a pattern, holding the flowers down as you wind it, and also keeping the with of the flower the same size. But overall I had a blast! I never thought that I would have so much fun, but the people there are really kind and they made me laugh the whole time I was there. But, I will definitely revisit them and take a tour of more of the places, since we weren’t able to due to rain. If you do come to Hawai’i, the Lyon Arboreteum is definitely a place to consider!

My Trip to Moloka'i

This past weekend, I went on a trip to the island of Moloka’i. My friend Chelae and I were selected to help recruit students from Moloka’i High School for our College Opportunities Program (COP), which is a program that we are part of. Also, Chelae wanted to show me her island and where she comes from. I was stoked when I found out that I was granted the privilege of going on this trip. Our flight was originally scheduled for 6:10am and we reached there an hour early for security purposes. That morning, it was pouring like crazy! I never saw it rain that hard before here in Hawai’i. We were in the middle of a storm that only reached our island the previous night and that morning, but it didn’t reach the other islands yet. So, we waited for our flight to board and we didn’t end up boarding 2 and half hours later. It was still raining ridiculously as we boarded the plane. As we were strapping our seat belts on, the captain comes in and tells us the we need to get off the plane because water got into their engine equipment and the plane had to go under maintenance. Out we went in the rain and back into the airport. There we waited for an hour and a half. Went to eat for an hour and came back and our flight still didn’t leave. At around noon, they announce that our flight has been cancelled. We were so angry because we really wanted to get to Moloka’I, especially Chelae because she hasn’t seen her family since we started school. We decided to book a flight for the next morning because the other flights were full and then standby for the rest of the day just in case someone doesn’t show up for their flight. We didn’t end up getting on a flight till 5:20 in the afternoon. So we were there at the airport for about 12 hours, totally RIDICULOUS! Anyways, we finally arrived in Moloka’i and Chelae’s mother picked us up. We went back to their house and ate our favorite, oven baked chicken with cream of mushroom soup. I felt kind of sick after dinner because of the bumpy flight, I get motion sickness. I took a fast nap then we went with Chelae and her friends driving around in the rain. They were showing me all these places in Moloka’I and they took me to their Pizza Café, which has awesome breadsticks! Then we went to get some famous Moloka’i “hot bread.” We had to walk in the rain to this alley where we knock on these two big doors and give them our order. Pretty scary, but it was pretty trippy and original! I have never seen any store or bakery that operated like that. I give them 4 gold stars…haha. We then drove to their “Moloka’i Drug Store” to just cruize and to eat the hot bread. The hot bread was AWESOME! I’m definitely going to visit them again. =P Also, I had a blast hanging out with Chelae’s friends, they are crazy funny and so nice. The next day we had our recruiting day at the high school. I didn’t know what to expect because I never gave a presentation to students like that. Chelae and I just decided to give our experiences and hopefully we would help a lot of them when they come to college. I think that we got a lot of people interested, which makes me feel good. I tried to not make the presentation so boring so I tried to make everyone laugh once in a while. But getting people excited for college made me feel so good inside because I’m helping someone. Just like Project Freshman, I’m sharing my experiences and hopefully I help someone out there. It might not be everyone, but hopefully it might be a few. Overall, my trip was awesome even though it was storming. I hope to go back soon because the people that I have met have been so welcoming, incredibly kind and laid back. It was nice to get away from the hectic life I have here in Oahu.

When we get here in college, everyone thinks that it’s all party! Well, that’s partly true because you also have to think about your schoolwork as well. I’ve been learning that there is a time to party and there is also a time to study. It may be very hard decisions at times because of the temptations to have fun but at the same time there are worries of not getting good grades. On the television, I always see that college is a place to party and hang out with friends all the time. Since I’ve been here, that’s pretty much how I felt. I always wanted to hang out with my friends and go out to places. After hanging out with my friends, I would come back to the dorms and do my homework. And by the time I finish my homework, it gets pretty late. Most of the time, I feel myself feeling so tired on the weekends that I don’t really want to do anything because whatever I did during the week fully exhausted me. I recently talked to one of my friends and he told me about the time he went to the hospital because his body was totally exhausted from school and work. I really don’t want to end up in the hospital just like he did. So, I really need to buckle down and focus on my studies more than going out and having fun. I’ve always been bad with time management and I decided that I needed to start fresh and get into a routine of “work first and play later.” I mean, I used to abide by this rule but when college came around, things start to CHANGE. Any ways, I’m buckling down and in the end it will be easier for me because I’ll get everything that I need to done and I can do what ever I want to do after.

Hey guys! I took two of my friends with me to a place called the Polynesian Cultural Center located on Lä’ie side of the island, which is really far from where I live. I took one of my friends from Japan and my other friend from Maui and they both haven’t been to this place before. So, I wanted to bring them to a part of the island that will show them more about the many cultures here in Hawai’i. We weren’t able to visit the seven different islands because our classes finished a little bit late. But we were able to visit the islands of Hawai’i, Samoa, and Aotearoa. First, we stopped by the island of Samoa where we learned how to twirl fire sticks. Of course we didn’t get to light the sticks up because if we did, I definitely would have burned my eyebrows off or something (haha). As we were twirling our sticks, I told the guy teaching us, “this is so hard, this stick is really heavy!” He then replied, “Oh, that’s because you have the heaviest one.” I felt so dumb when he told me that =P but that’s ok, I got big muscles now. Just kidding! Any ways, the second place that we visited was the island of Aotearoa. There we learned how to use “poi balls” that were attached to really long string. They were mainly used in many dances. Then we played “Tititorea,” which is a stick game that they played. That was pretty awesome because we make beats with the sticks while passing it to each other. And the final place we visited was the island of Hawai’i. We learned a short hula dance. I found that I’m not that coordinated, but I still had fun! After visiting those three islands, we attended a big luau. The food was so “Ono,” which means that it was absolutely delicious! My friends and I had some taro bread, rice, kalua pig, lomi salmon, poi, and chicken long rice. If any of you guys come down to Hawai’i, you have to get yourself a plate of Hawaiian food and you won’t regret it. You could also get a virgin pina colada served in an empty (but decorated) pineapple. We couldn’t have any, but I suggest that you guys try it! After the day was done, we came back to the dorms and crashed (sleep). But, my friends had so much fun and I was happy to have taken them to get an island experience. I recommend that if you have a chance to visit Hawai’i, you should go to the Polynesian Cultural Center for a great cultural experience and you can get a better understanding of some of the different cultures.

I recently had my last intramural basketball game. I was asked to participate in the All-Star game and I was pretty stoked when I got the call. So we ended up winning the game! That was awesome! I thought that we would win t-shirts or something for winning, but we didn’t…haha. But it was all for fun, so it’s ok! =D Any ways, being an equipment manager here at the University, I get court/field side seats. Well not exactly seats because I’ll be running around and working. But I have to admit that it’s a great view of the game. I’m not allowed to cheer as hard as I usually do because we are kind of restricted to do that while working. Kind of sucks, but it’s ok. It is so much fun watching the athletes play and being that close to them. I always used to watch it from the television when I was younger, not knowing I was going to be court/field side with the players. So much fun! But being on the sideline, makes me wonder what it would feel like actually playing. The sea of green and black shirted fans cheering for you, the adrenaline rushing through your body when out on the court/field, getting free equipment and having things layd out for you, and the feeling of having kids running down from the bleachers to come and ask for your autograph. I’m sure it’s an amazing feeling and sometimes I wish that I were the one playing. If I took sports more seriously as I was younger and trained hard for one particular sport, maybe I could be good enough to play for college. There are many different factors why I wouldn’t be able to play. Some of the factors are that I’ve been getting lazy, I’m not in shape, I’m not allowed to tryout my first year due to being part of the College Opportunities Program, and obviously my height. So, it would have definitely been an obstacle. Plus, there might only be room on the team for one walk-on and most of the team is already set. But, I just always wonder what it’s like to be on the court/field and how great the feeling would be. But for now, I’m satisfied just sitting and watching from the sideline.

This week started off great! It was pretty chill in the beginning. One of my friends, Kat, decided to dye her hair and after she got hers done, I decided to do my own hair. My parents are usually strict about what I do with my hair, but I decided to dye it any ways. Monday night, my friends and me drove down to Longs Drugs and picked up some hair dye. My roommate dyed my hair when we got back to the dorms. It didn’t quite turn out the first time, so later that night my friend, Nora, re-dyed it. I know it’s very unhealthy for the hair, but I really wanted it to be lighter. The next day, I got some compliments that were awesome! On Wednesday night, I saw my mom and I was expecting to get a bad reaction from her. But instead, she thought it was pretty nice, which I thought was really surprising! It was all good. Later on during the week, things started to get frustrating for me. I had an important midterm that I really needed to pass because I am in need of maintaining a high GPA. If I don’t maintain a high GPA, then I will lose my grants from financial aid, which we need to be able to afford college. My family and me aren’t able to pay off the college fees without the help of my grants. So this past exam was very important! Although I was stressing on passing this exam, there were many outside conflicts that were to come that were unexpected. I can’t really go into detail about the specific situations, but all I can say is that it involved boyfriends and friends. When my friends were at their lowest stages, I didn’t want to just leave them to be depressed by themselves. I wanted to be a good friend and be there for them, but at the same time I kept thinking in my head that I really need to go and study. The decision to leave or stay was very difficult for me because what if I decided to stay, how am I going to study? Would I fail my test? I’m being a great friend aren’t I? But if I decided to leave, would I be a bad friend? What if they do something stupid while I’m not there? Wouldn’t I be much more prepared for the exam when I study? There were so many questions that were popping into my head those few nights. Well in the end, I decided to stay most of the time. I thought I was being a really good friend but in the end, I also got hurt. I took my exam at the end of the week and I knew that I didn’t do that good. The previous night of the exam, I didn’t study that much because I wasn’t feeling well and I was really tired. There were so many things going on around me that strayed me away from what I’m here in college to do, which is to obtain all the knowledge that I can and get the best education that I could possibly get. There were some decisions that I have made not only with friends that I regret now because it only affected me in the end. I learned how to handle those situations better and I hope to make better decisions in the future.

Classes were pretty chill this week, at least compared to last week. We had the usual homework and pop quizzes. But, I think that this week was more of a relief than last week because I didn't have any exams to study for. Luckily, my professors decided to give them out a week early, which left us to have fun while all the other classes were stressing over their exams. In my Nutrition class, we were just informed on Friday that we have another exam coming up next week. Now I know that my stress levels are definitely going to increase starting next week, not only from school but from my outside curricular activities as well. Unfortunately, this past week was our final intramural basketball game. If we had won, we would've been playing in the championship game, which many people expected us to be in. But, I think that we weren't focused enough on this past week’s game, but rather on next week’s game. That really hurt us and that's just a consequence that we have to deal with. I mean intramurals are supposed to be for fun, but to me basketball and sports in general, mean a lot more. I think watching people play sports, shows a lot about a person. Such as, how hard they work, dedication, and the type of person they are. When I play, I get angry and frustrated at times, and I know that's how I am in certain situations outside of sports. Oh, and I got my first bloody nose this past game, yes, MY FIRST! I also, landed on my tailbone, which for a couple days after and I had a hard time walking. It didn't matter if I was in pain because one of my other teammates and me got selected to play in the All-Star game. So I'm super STOKED! =) I have been with my roommate since the beginning of the College Opportunities Program (COP) that started on July.1st, for about 3 months now. In the beginning of this semester, I guess you can say that we were drifting apart, but now we've got much more closer. Many people that I know living in the dorms are starting to complain about their roommates and all the awkwardness. But, I'm happy that my roommate and me aren't going through that type of drama. This past Wednesday us and our other friends, Kat and Jelly, went to Waiola Shave Ice. That is the best shave ice that you're going to discover because the ice is so fine, it just melts in your mouth like ice cream. So I think that everyone should check it out. We had a lot of fun there! To sum up all things, it was a really easy week compared to most. But I know that things are starting to get a lot more stressful with school, project freshman, balancing time with friends, and other things that may pop up during the week. Things are just piling up and getting a little overwhelming, but hopefully I can manage my time correctly, which is something I've been struggling with, and get through this week without having a total melt down.

Howit going everyone?! I'm so happy to be apart of Project: Freshman and I'm very excited to start this season! I didn't think I would get selected for anything like this, but when I got the call from Tracey, I was absolutely stoked! I couldn't wait to start! This week I got to meet the executive producers Tim and Hunter, who are awesome! I look forward to working with them. Im usually camera shy, but I think I've been getting used to it. It feels a little weird always carry my camera with me, but in a way I also feel special. =) Nah, but the hardest thing for me so far dealing with Project: Freshman is figuring out what to film. I always ask myself, "what exactly do I film?" This week was kind of the test run, so now I know what to expect. School for me this week was extremely difficult and stressful! More pressure is on because in college, students aren't based on couple of assignments and then their exams. Not many professors give out assignments, they mainly base you on your tests and exams. It's really difficult for me because I'm not a really good test taker. I have a hard time memorizing things and that's very important! So hopefully by the end of this semester, I can figure out a study routine that will help me memorize things and it can help me become successful in college. It was very stressful this week and it kind of got to me in the beginning of the week. I had to shake it off because if I stayed stressed out, then I would have forgotten everything I studied for the exam. But overall, I don't think that I did that well on my exams this past week. I know that I could have done better, but for the next exams, I now know what to expect. Such as the questions that the professors will have on the exams, how to take better notes in class, and how to study better for the next one!
