This week is the week before finals. I can’t even explain how much studying is involved with this week. I have been studying none stop since Monday and I still need to study all day Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully I will be able to finish these tests with decent grades. I am confident in my history and English classes, but my bio and speech classes are a little hazier. I am confident though so I know I will be ok. It’s a small hump to get over before I can finally go home and visit my friends and family for the holidays! I am ready for this break!

This Thanksgiving break was crazy! I went out to my roommate Kseans house on the north shore, and let me tell you that it is amazing! The house was beautiful and just a few hundred yards from a private beach. For Thanksgiving me and my friend Miles went to the private beach and climbed a coconut tree to pick coconuts. After we got them down my roommates little brother showed us how to husk them by putting a log in the sand and making a point on it, then he showed us how to take the husk off using the point on the log. My thanksgiving wasn’t what you call “traditional”.lol. After getting back from the beach, Ksean’s parents took us to this beautiful beachside restaurant where we had the chance to see the green flash on the sunset. On Friday, Ksean, Miles, and me went to Waimea for a surf competition and to see what the waves looked like for body surfing. When we got there the waves were about 14 to 16 foot faces! I don’t know how Ksean talked me into getting in there to body surf the waves but he did. I decided to go in on a small set, but when we went in it ended up being the biggest set of the day! I was alright at first, ducking under wave after wave; as a result, I exhausted myself trying to keep from drifting too far. I caught one enormous wave that was about 13 feet and rode it in, but when I went to come up for air the undertow caught me and drug me back under the water! I started to panic and swallowed some sea water, but I got myself under control and held my breath until I could get to the surface. I honestly thought I was going to drown and I started to think about some weird stuff, but that experience opened my eyes about not going out of your experience level. I wouldn’t do it again, even though Ksean said I handled myself better than anyone else he has taken in there for their first time. This could not have happened anywhere else except Hawaii , and it was definitely a Thanksgiving to remember!

This weekend, I went to a beach called sandy with my roommate Ksean, and two other friends. It is a really popular body and boogey boarding beach in Oahu. It is an intense place, and not for inexperienced swimmers or body boarders. The waves are not the biggest, but sets can come out of nowhere and clean you up. The waves are really good shore breaks so that you can stand in the water and catch them coming into the beach, you do not have to swim the whole time even though I swam almost the whole time there. The waves were decent size, about three to four feet, but cross winds were really making them flat. After getting warmed up though I caught a couple of decent size waves that I could catch in to the beach. A few times though I got slammed in the barrel of the wave… it wasn’t good. All in all though it was a really fun day of body surfing and chilling with friends.

Finally I got some action on the field! Flag football season started yesterday and I was itching for some time with the pig skin. I never met anyone from my team and we had never practiced, so I had no idea how we were going to perform. I knew most of the people on my team though so that helped my confidence. Our first game was against my roommate and his team, so it was a competitive game. After making four touchdowns and getting a bunch of yards I felt a whole lot better after getting some football out of my system. My team ended up on top luckily by one touchdown, so I have bragging rights for some time.lol.

Mokapu is a place on the eastern side of Oahu that has a really good beach break. Me and four of my friends go there and try out hand at body surfing, where you catch a wave without a body board or a surfboard. When we got there, the waves were not as big as usual, but that all changed after about twenty minutes. After a little time in the water the waves became huge! We were catching five to seven feet waves with nothing but arm paddling and muscle. We even had a game going that was a little like chicken, where we would stand with our hands behind our back and stay there when a wave was going to break on us and the last person to be standing was the winner. The winner was also the loser because the waves took you out; which felt like a hit from Brian Urlacher. Over all though; it was a good day but an exhausting day.

This week was hell! Midterm mania is an appropriate title for this week, trust me! Every day has been a mix of studying in four hour intervals; for two intervals; and taking midterms that I am studying for. I had two midterms on Monday alone, in speech and biology 171, but luckily I did good on both of them. After that; I had a midterm in history that was a struggle, not because the material was hard but because I ran out of time on the last essay on the test. I still haven’t been given the grade for that test. I probably studied a total of 28 hours this week alone! Midterms are over though, so I can finally take a well needed breath of relief. The only tests now are FINALS!!

You know those days where you just go to do something simple, like go to the movies, but you end up having some weird adventure? I had one of those days this monday. I was just going to the movies to see a movie I really wanted to watch. I took the bus to the Ala Moana Mall because the directions said the theater was just behind it, but being somewhat unsure, I asked a bum where the movie theater was after giving him three dollars. He looked at me with a confused look and said "man its way down town, like fifteen blocks!", he saw the look of being pissed off on my face and said something that I should have walked away after hearing. "man, but for three dollars I'll take you there, I got me some wheels bro!". Now after hearing that I should have said no thank you, but something in my head said "hmm...could be interesting!".lol. So we hopped on his scooter that had a duffel bag on the foot rest and I was wearing his backpack because we couldn't fit with it on him. He was holding a cup in one hand and the handle bars in the other, while talking to me at the same time. I can remember a few times jumping a sidewalk and almost going down at 25 mph.lol. We finally got to the movies, and I find out that he took me to the wrong theater. I said thank you any how and just got off, that was enough for me. I made it there in one piece and alive so I was gratefully, but I took the bus back. Whatever though, sometimes you just got to roll with stuff in life, and take the opportunities you get

Zoo adventure

Recently I went to the zoo with my friend Loral who filmed the whole thing(thank you Loral!!), and it was amazing. We walked in and found the zoo keeper of the tigers and monkeys. We went to the monkeys cages first, but we went behind all of the cages where only the zoo keepers get to go. The monkeys were so loude that you could barely hear yourself think, arguing and fighting. We then went to the Lemur cage, they were the cutest things there. The zoo keeper refered to them as his "special ed group." lol. We were able to practice a learning game with them though, where you put a stick through the cage and say "Target", and the lemur has to tough the stick before he can get a piece of food. That was cool but I was ready for the tigers! We headed over to the tiger enclosure where we went behind the main enclosure where each one had its own cage. There was a big male tiger that was sitting in the first cage and was just stairing at me and Loral, sizing us up. I wasn't even nervouse at all, I was to excited to be scared. The oldest female was pacing back and forth against the cage and rubbing against our hands. It was the most amazing feeling in the world to actually touch an animal like that, it was a dream come true. We got to feed them also! We went into the enclosure and hung up pieces of chicken on trees and on a zip line. The tiger came out and climbed the tree like it was nothing, hanging from its front two legs. The tiger went to the zip line and jumped 15 feet strieght up and grabbed the chicken. IT WAS AWESOME!!! it is something that I am not going to forget this ever!

My english teacher assighned our class to read an article telling the history of Hawai'i and how it came to be what it is today. The article discussed the tension that is between America and the Hawiian people, because of the fact that we killed they're queen and took they're land without leaving anything for them. It was a sobering reality becouse I was like any other person coming here for vacation or school, I didn't know the history and I didn't care. Hawai'i is not ours and we need to respect that. I found a new level of understanding of the natives of this island, and I think that if your thinking of coming here just learn a little about the history of Hawai'i and to respect that this is the Hawaiians land. Its hard to admit, it was for me, but I think that if you do that than people will respect you a lot more over here and you will have a much better time here.

I went to my friend cranes room and asked him for his hair clippers! I wanted to cut this mop I had on top of my head, it was getting on my nervs becous my whole family has damn curly hair and it doesn't down, it grows up and out like a fro. I went up to the roof of the freshman doorm and said a goodbye to my hair. Crane looked at me and asked "What you want bra?" I said the first thing that came to my head, "a mohawk!". I had the sides shaved to the skin with no guard, and just the middle left intakt. I woke up the next morning and looked in the mirror, wondering why I had done it. oh well, hair grows back so it doesn't matter, but I've had so many weird lookes from people when I wear my hair spiked up, you wouldn't think how much people judge you on your hair, its kinda not cool.

Pain at Waimea

This weekend was awesome. I went up to Waimea Bay up on the north shore for the first time. At Waimea there is a huge rock that all of the locals and tourists jump off of. It's about twenty five or thirty feet out of the water with only about 12 feet deep of water. It is really sketchy because you hit the bottom in the water, but it is kind of soft because of the sand. When you get to the rock you have to climb up the thirty foot, slippery rock, and you cannot come back down because the locals say you will have bad luck. It is really an amazing thing because the locals go there every day and they jump off of the rock doing back flips, gainers, double back flips, and any combination you can think of. After I climbed the thirty feet up, I stood at the edge of the rock, it wasn't that intimidating though because I have jumped off of bridges in Washington since I was seven years old, some of them being sixty feet high. For someone who has never done something like this though it could be intimidating. I took a step to the edge and without hesitation jumped and crossed my legs. It is a really cool feeling jumping off of things like that, it is a big rush. After my second time jumping I decided to get a little cockier and try a front flip with a round off. I got to the top and for some reason this time it looked a little higher, but I didn't hesitate because if you think about it you will get hurt. I jumped off and did a good flip but over rotated, and the next thing I knew I was going for another front flip and heading face first into the water. SLAP! Yea I ate it pretty hard, it was the most intense pain I have felt in a while but I came up laughing, I mean what can you do about it other than laugh. When I got back to the top I got prop's from the locals for trying it my first time ever being there. My stomach still hurts, but it was an awesome trip, I am definitely going to go back and get better at it.

This week was a realy good one, I could not have asked for a better one! Thursday me and my friend Alex who is also from Washington, went to the local safeway behing the University of Hawaii and baught a whole bunch of stuff to go barbequing with, like burger patties, bunns, catsup, mustard, tomatos, letus, charcoal, avacados, and of corse Johnsons Seasoning Salt. For the people that are from Washington state you know what im talking about, you cannot have a barbeque without the Johnsons. After we got down to the grill in the middle of the courtyard inbetween the four freshman towers, we tried to get a fire started. This was the hardest part of the whole ordeal, we tried for thirty minutes to get the coals hot enouph, pouring lighter fluid on like it was water. Well thirty minutes, a bottle of lighter fluid, and a couple of eyebrows later we had the grill going. We tried to sell the burgers to people but they had just eaten(or it was an excuse to not eat my food.) but the people that did buy them said that they were awesome. Also this weekend I went to Hanauma Bay, a popular tourist snorkeling location on Oahu that is made from an enourmus crater. After meeting up with my friends Laural and Dave we took the twenty minut bus ride to Hanauma Bay. when you first get there you walk down a road that goes along the cliffside of the huge crater that leads about 300 feet to the beach. I had been there before but after getting in the water I was still amazed at all of the colorfull fish and all the different types you get to see, there are more than 20 different species just in Hanauma Bay. You have to be carefull though becouse every nook and cranny is filled with sea urchans, or you can make the mistake I almost did and put your hand on a six foot moray eel with a bad attitude and big teeth. After a couple of hourse we left, totally exhaughsted from swimming.something else that made my week was that I got new guitar strings for my acoustic!! I had not played it in almost a week and a half and believe it or not I had actually gotten depressed over it. If I do not play my guitar for a while I get in bad moods and I feel depressed, so when I got the new strings I immediately learned a new song my by Cory Crowder called "Here's looking at you." but thats all for me but Ill post you guys soon. elliott
