SAN ANTONIO- What a comeback. Kansas, trailing by 9 with 2:12 to go in regulation, used a 12-3 run to close out regulation and outscored Memphis 12-5 in the overtime to win their first national championship in 20 years Monday night at the Alamo Dome. The rally was due most to Memphis' lack of hitting free throws down the stretch. They missed 4 of their final 5 down the stretch, and with 2.1 seconds left guard Mario Chalmers hit a three-pointer at the top of the key, tieing the score at 63 and sending the game to overtime. With all the momentum of the comeback, Kansas dominated the overtime and easily put an end to a memorable game.
Kansas' Mario Chalmers, obviously, was named Most Oustanding Player of the Final Four, with what coach Bill Self called "the biggest shot ever made in Kansas history", along with his 18 points. Other notables include Darrell Arthur who dominated the paint, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Memphis' Derrick Rose dominated the second half, finishing with 18 points. All-American guard Chris Douglas-Roberts also played well, finishing with a game-high 22, but missed 4 straight free-throws in the final minute that doomed the Tigers.
