Adios Adu

Freddy Adu is saying good-bye to the MLS and heading over to far greener pitches (a pitch is a soccer field for those who are unaware). He has agreed to join Portugal team Benfica and spent practice time with them on yesterday.

I think it's great for Freddy Adu, but another blow for the MLS. Freddy was one of the league's marquee players, coming to play for D.C. United when he was 14 (he'd been traded to Salt Lake last year). Under FIFA rules, Adu became eligible to play for a foreign club when he turned 18 this year.

While the MLS is hoping that David Beckham (who has yet to play due to an ankle injury) will help popularity, it just seems to me that talented young players will still keep leaving and only older international players who are worn out will ever come here. On that note ... Luis Figo, where are you?!

Yes
